Residential Rain Garden Workshops: Plan, Prep, Plant, Maintain

Join us in learning how to create and maintain a functional rain garden, reduce standing water on your property and protect nearby waterways. In this 1 ½ hour workshop we will discuss:

  • How to design a rain garden to enhance your landscaping
  • Necessary soil amendments and mulch
  • Typical rain garden plants, grasses and groundcovers
  • Tips on keeping your rain garden beautiful and working

When: January 25, 2017, 6:30-8 p.m.

Free Advanced Defensive Firearms Class

Please join University Place Police Deputy Dan Hacker for free classes regarding defensive firearms.  This will be a classroom setting, where the students do not do any actual firearms handling. It is recommended that students are 12 years of age and older.

Free Basic Defensive Firearms Class

Please join University Place Police Deputy Dan Hacker for free classes regarding defensive firearms.  This will be a classroom setting, where the students do not do any actual firearms handling.  It is recommended that students are 12 years of age and older.

The Basic Defensive Firearms class covers topics such as firearms safety, use of force law, and liability, alternatives to firearm use, and basic handgun control and manipulation.  Do NOT bring firearms to class. Class size is limited.

Insect Class/Sticky Apple Hanging at the Barn

Learn how to deal with the dreaded apple maggot and other pesky insects at a FREE class taught by Master Gardener and Western Cascade Fruit Society member Bill Horn. The class is scheduled from 9–10 a.m. in the orchard barn, located at 3920 Grandview Drive West in University Place.

Class participants will receive a free “sticky” apple to take home for their own apple trees. Please pre-register at apples@curranappleorchard.com.

Night Pruning Class

Learn a new skill and help take care of a unique orchard park in University Place!

Join us at a free Night Pruning Class taught by Master Gardener/arborist Robert Sweet on Thursday, January 25, from 7 -9 p.m. at the United Church in University Place, located at 3912 Grandview Drive W.  

Participants in this class (sponsored by CORE Curran Orchard Resource Enthusiasts) will get an overview of proper pruning techniques for apple trees. Interested people can then practice their skills at the upcoming Pruning Parties at the Curran Orchard located at 3920 Grandview Drive W:

Pruning Party

Trained volunteers and Master Gardeners are available to assist people at pruning parties held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

People are welcome to prune at their convenience AFTER receiving appropriate instructions. Recommended pruning tools include work gloves, hand pruners, loppers and hand saws. Some tools available on site. Please carry all trimmings to the dumpsters.

Informational signage regarding proper pruning techniques and tools are also located near the Curran Barn as well as by the Espalier Fence off the Grandview Drive entrance into the park.
