The Vision Becomes a Reality!
Since its inception in 2001, the skatepark at the southeast corner of Bridgeport Way West and Cirque Drive West has been the vision of the University Place Youth. With the help of their parents, Park Commissioners and City Staff they met together at public workshops to formulate plans for a "dream" park. They brought their ideas for the design of the skate bowls, beginners' area and above ground structures, as well as the BMX Bike Track.
In 2003, a volunteer committee was formalized and named "The BMX/Skateboard Park Partners." They hosted fund raising events, organized workshops and facilitated community support for the park.
Groundbreaking came Saturday, August 9, 2003. In attendance were University Place Youth and their parents, City Council members, Park Commissioners, City Staff and company representatives from Robison Construction.
The first stage of construction, the Master Grading, was completed October 10th, 2003. Construction of the concrete bowls and above ground structures was completed May 14, 2004.
The BMX/Skateboard Park Partners in cooperation with local businesses and City Staff hosted the Grand Opening event Saturday, May 15th, 2004.
Watch for the next phase of the Cirque/Bridgeport Park development, which is the construction of the sanctioned BMX Bike Track.
