State of the City - Linda Bird

2007 will be a very exciting year in the City of University Place. If you have walked the Grandview Trail in recent months, you may have noticed that the Chambers Bay Golf Course is taking shape. This project is an example of how the City has partnered with other agencies like the Pierce County Sewer Utility to increase the recreational opportunities in our City. The golf course, walking trails, and public meadows will not only provide needed recreational opportunities, but will also promote tourism, increase the tax base and provide employment opportunities for our citizens.

Chambers Bay Golf Course is scheduled to open for play in early summer of this year. This 18-hole Scottish links style championship golf course will be a walking-only course, and will include a caddie program and jobs for local youths. The construction of a temporary clubhouse, golf cart storage and maintenance facilities are also underway.

Final green fees have not been determined, however, Pierce County residents will receive reduced rates. The complete rate structure will be posted in April 2007. The clubhouse restaurant will offer spectacular views and will be open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. A large semi-permanent tent will be installed on the overlook area left of the clubhouse May through October to accommodate weddings and other large catered events.

The northern half of Soundview Trail around the golf course will also open this spring. Linking with the northern and southern ends of the Grandview Trail, it will offer stunning views of Puget Sound as it meanders along the western edge of the course. Construction of the North Meadow facilities, with a six-acre public recreation area, scenic overlook, restrooms and a car park, are also underway. The first annual Chambers Creek Properties ''Fun Run'' this spring will mark the opening of the walking trail and Meadow.

The partnerships we have developed over the years have resulted in increased services, lowered costs and saving to our citizens. The strengthening of these and new partnerships are sure to result in the continued improvement of the quality of life in our community.
